I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the software of the web isn’t ready for the influx of parallax backgrounds that are flooding the web.
What I’m referring to here is the scrolling backgrounds all over the web that move at different speeds to the ‘foreground’ in order to create the perception of 3D layering.
The problems I see are two fold:
- These techniques munch through RAM like the cookie monster in a bakery on cheat day
- It’s nauseating and if done imperfectly quite off putting as your brain struggles to interpret what’s happening
I’m happy to admit I’ve used parallax with clients but it only took up about 10% of the view so it was a subtlety rather than a slap to the face.
What do you think of parallax? Is it a novelty or something worth using?
