I taught myself to code but really struggled with the concept of outsourcing for 5 years – up to that point, I just did everything myself. I’m not normally a control freak, but for some reason, the idea of outsourcing tech was super intimidating – even as someone who wrote code for a living!
Everyone raved about how great it was to send your work offshore, and they made it look easy – but I just couldn’t get it to work for me.

I put it off for years (literally) because I tried it once and had a bad experience. I had a project that it made sense to experiment on (read: long deadline). So I decided to finally give it a go – knowing that I’d have time to save it if something went wrong.
I ended up hiring someone with loads of experience and about a dozen languages listed on their profile, but they ended up delivering some pretty average work that barely resembled the design I gave them… That meant hours & hours of back-and-forth trying to get them to do what I asked for in the first place! After that…
After that, I tried quite a few times more but didn’t get much better results.
But in 2014, that all changed when I decided to get serious and really invest in figuring out how to make it work.
I was working on my side project Seed The Change (a company I later sold) as well as working on an ad-tech platform for Ogilvy (combining 5+ ad network reports into a single report and automating 3-days a week of excel work per user!).
I was the product manager and lead developer on both projects and they both were making money, so we decided it was time to invest in adding some extra hands to the job.
I spent a huge amount of time researching best practices and asking around and finally, I found some great people to work with!
Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working with and managing well over a dozen outsourced developers from around the world and have personally managed well over $300,000 in outsourced development.
When I started, I didn’t have much of a game plan, so this article is the quick-start guide I wish I had when I tried outsourcing the first time.
It’s all well and good to read an article with 93 strategies for outsourcing software development but do you really have time to implement them all? I know I don’t!
